Ezra was a Quaker in his youth and his teenage years were
spent in Bristol, Vermont. After marriage they lived in
Bristol.
In 1829 they moved to Sparta, Livingston, New
York, with his brother Isaac, to live on a farm. While
there, they met the Mormon missionaries and joined the Church in 1839.
Ezra returned to Bristol as a missionary,
and he converted the family of his deceased brother, Abner. Soon after, he and Isaac moved their families to Nauvoo.
In 1842, Ezra led an expedition of 50 men up the
Mississippi River to the pine woods of Wisconsin, where
they helped operate several saw mills. They returned in
October with a huge raft and timber for the Temple and
Nauvoo House.
In 1846, the Chase families fled west with
the other saints. After arriving in the Valley, they soon
moved on to Weber County
where they settled in the Mound
Fort Area of Ogden. In 1850, Ezra, his wife Tirzah,
and their younger children joined an expedition to
California to the gold fields of El Dorado.
In 1853,
they went south to San Bernardino.
They returned to Weber
County when San Bernardino was abandoned in 1857/58.
Ezra
became the great grandfather of George Albert Smith,
eighth president of the church
